Foods That Help Keep Teeth White

White teeth are one of the key elements that make up a beautiful smile. There are plenty of things that can get in the way of keeping the teeth white. Dark sodas, strongly colored sports drinks, and excess amounts of sugar can all take a toll on teeth whiteness. Fortunately, there are some foods that help keep teeth white.

Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese

Dairy products are known for being great sources of calcium and vitamin D, both of which play a role in keeping tooth enamel strong. Enamel has a naturally white appearance. The stronger and thicker it is, the whiter the teeth look. Dairy products also contain lactic acid, which seems to have a protective effect against tooth decay. For strong teeth, choose milk, yogurt, and cheese, specifically hard cheeses. Hard cheeses are better at removing food particles than softer cheeses.

Apples, Celery, and Carrots

Speaking of foods that can remove food particles from the teeth, crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, celery, and carrots can also help scrub the teeth. This is important because clean teeth are less susceptible to decay. The enamel is the first thing to go, exposing the yellow dentin beneath. These foods also stimulate saliva production. In addition to helping break down food, saliva is the mouth’s self-rinsing agent. Apples, celery, and carrots may even help get rid of the bacteria that cause bad breath.

Strawberries

Would you be surprised to learn that strawberries can help whiten teeth? It may seem a little strange, considering their bright red color and ability to stain clothes. They interact differently with teeth though, thanks to their malic acid content. The malic acid in strawberries helps whiten teeth. To take advantage of the whitening capabilities of strawberries, mash them up and then rub them on the teeth. Leave them there for about five minutes before rinsing, brushing, and flossing. Make sure you’re thorough in your cleaning. Strawberries may help whiten teeth, but leaving food particles of any sort on the teeth for long periods will contribute to tooth decay.

Eating foods that preserve tooth whiteness or even have some minor whitening effects are great inclusions in any child’s diet. These foods are a great source of vitamins and minerals as well. Remember to use them to supplement your child’s oral hygiene routine and regular dental visits so their teeth will be healthy and strong.
