How Your Child Can Get the Best Results from Their Braces Treatment

As a parent, you want what is best for your child. In terms of protecting their oral health, using braces to straighten and properly align their teeth is a good move. Simply wearing braces may not be enough to get the best results from their treatment. So what should your child do to get optimal results?

Clean Them Well

Thoroughly cleaning the braces and teeth is essential to getting the best results from your child’s braces treatment. It serves two purposes. First, it protects against tooth decay, something that your child will be more susceptible to since it’s harder to do a good job cleaning the teeth with braces on them. Second, it reduces the chances of experiencing tooth discoloration. By diligently and thoroughly cleaning the teeth, the portions not covered by the braces are more likely to match the parts underneath the brackets when the braces are removed.

Wear All the Pieces

Some people use bands or headgear in conjunction with their braces to correct the bite (the way the jaws and teeth come together). If that’s part of your child’s braces treatment, they’ll need to wear all the parts involved as directed by the orthodontist. Failing to do so will prolong treatment and prevent you from getting the best results possible.

Keep the Appointments

It should go without saying, but you have to keep your orthodontic appointments to get the best results from your child’s braces treatment. Regular appointments give the orthodontist a chance to check on the progress being made. This is when adjustments will be made so progress can continue unhindered as well. Remember to take your child to their regular dental appointments as well. Because it’s harder to keep the teeth clean, it’s more important than ever to get them professionally cleaned and for their condition to be closely monitored.

Braces do a lot of the work when it comes to putting teeth in their proper place. They can’t do it all on their own though, not if you want optimal results. Help your child understand what needs to be done to get the best results from their braces treatment and why it matters. They’ll probably need your help and support doing some of those things, so be ready to help them as needed. It’s work, but you’ll both be glad you did it when the braces are removed and you see the results of your efforts.
