How to Make Adjusting to Braces More Comfortable
For those whose children need a straighter, more aligned smile, braces are often a go-to solution. Braces are safe and effective. Thanks to technological advances in braces, they achieve results faster than ever. Braces work around the clock to straighten teeth. They aren’t always comfortable to wear though, especially at the beginning. So what can you do to help your child adjust to braces more comfortably?
Choose Foods Wisely
Chewing, one of the first steps in the digestive process, requires pressure to be applied to the teeth. Much of the discomfort experienced when braces are applied or adjusted comes from the pressure the braces put on the teeth to move them. Adding more pressure through chewing is a recipe for greater discomfort. Choose soft foods that are easy to chew. Pasta, soft bread, mashed potatoes, eggs, pudding, soft vegetables, and yogurt are great options.
Use a Saltwater Rinse
The mouth is a pretty sensitive area. Braces rubbing against the soft tissues of the lips can lead to irritation and discomfort. If your child experiences irritation due to the braces rubbing against the mouth, have them rinse their mouth with saltwater. Mix half a teaspoon of salt with a cup of warm water and direct them to use it to rinse their mouth for 30 seconds at a time, 5-6 times a day. The saltwater will help alleviate their discomfort and aid the healing process.
Apply Dental Wax as Needed
A saltwater rinse is great, but it won’t prevent the braces from continuing to rub painfully against the mouth. That’s where dental wax comes into play. Dental wax can be placed over the parts of the braces that are rubbing to shield the mouth from harm. This is a great solution for protecting the mouth until the tissue has toughened up. Break off a small piece of dental wax, roll it into a little ball, and then apply it to the braces where they are rubbing.
There’s no doubt that braces are effective, but the pressure they apply to the teeth can be uncomfortable at times. This is especially true when they are first applied and then following adjustments. Take measures to help your child adjust to their braces comfortably and pay attention to how they describe how they feel. If they are in pain following the application or adjustment of braces, call their orthodontist to see what action should be taken.
